Star Trivet for Christmas

9 inch diameter trivet

Finshed Trivet

I’ve working on a star trivet for Christmas using the excellent instructions posted on the Bronze Wombat blog.

I’d had this pattern bookmarked for a while and had a metre of red printed Christmas tree fabric in my stash which I purchased at last year’s after Christmas sales. It was nagging me as I really didn’t want to have it taking up space for another year. I also had a small quantity of bright red unpatterned fabric which I wanted to get rid of as it was so bright, it hurt my eyes.

The star trivet was the perfect solution as it allowed me to make a feature of my Christmas tree fabric and at the same time bury that intense bright fabric. I chose greens as the contrast as it provides a place to rest your eyes and provides a seasonally-themed contrast to the red.

The trivet has a 9 inch diameter circle and is bound with bias binding.

If you decide to make this trivet, be warned that it consumes quite a lot of fabric, much of which is hidden under the other layers. You might not want to use your very finest quilting fabric. Any seasonal cotton print will do the job.

  1. Good for you. Please post a photo of what you make on your blog.

I recommend you cut your bias binding extra wide. I cut mine at 2 1/4 inches, which seems really wide, but turned out to be pretty much right. There are a lot of layers to bind (and to cut, which is a whole other story.)

I added a layer of batting to give my trivet extra insulation. Will post a photo as soon as I’ve hand sewn the binding to the back.

    • Thanks for stopping by and for your kind words. It might look complicated but it’s not difficult when you do it step by step. This was the first time I’d ever cut my own bias binding and even that wasn’t hard to do.

  2. I’m so glad you found my tutorial and I love your star trivet – your colour choices are very Christmassy – love the green plaid, doesn’t it look great!
