Rugged metal trouser zippers look great on coin purses and they work well too. Sadly they aren’t available at Spotlight in lengths greater than eight inches so you can’t buy them there to sew bigger bags.
This coin purse is made with a five inch zipper. The outside is a remnant of curtain fabric that I bought at some crazy bargain price just to muck around with. There wasn’t enough left on the bolt for a pair of curtains and at the time I recall thinking it would make a cheerful cushion cover. Well, that hasn’t happened yet, but the coin purse did.
The inner lining is a scrap of blue quilting fabric. Yes, it’s lined. Nice touch, that, if I say so myself.

Coin purses are so fun and easy to make. A year or so ago I started a sewing club and this was one of the first projects we did. It’s a great way to learn how to put on a zipper and it’s rewarding because it’s such a quick project! I’ve made quite a few of these and even made my son some to put some of his little game cartridges in.

I think your purse is so smart. I wish I could make one of these, but I don’t know how to use a sewing machine (I do all my patchwork and quilting by hand). I do own one that was given to me by an aunt, but apart from attaching binding to quilts (a feat that I learned how to master courtesy of YouTube), I don’t know how to do anything else with it. Such a shame, because I would love to be able to make things like your coin purse or homemade bags to give as gifts.
Sounds to me like you are more than capable of using a sewing machine. Attaching binding to a quilt isn’t what I would call a beginner’s task, especially if you managed to make mitred corners.
If I can find some time in between work, home life and everything else I’ll try and put together a coin purse tutorial.
Suggest you give that sewing machine another whirl – you’ve already demonstrated you can sew straight lines and that’s all most patchwork requires.
Thank you for your vote of confidence, MT. I must confess, I use a quarter-inch foot with a guard on it to make sure I attach my binding straight … when I don’t, I can slip and slide around something shocking!
If you have the opportunity to make a tutorial for the coin purses, I would definitely give it a go … but there’s no pressure, only do it if you have the time with everything that’s going on in your life!
